What is psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a collaborative mental health service that can help people explore thoughts, emotions, behaviours, relationships, coping patterns, and life experiences. In Ontario, psychotherapy is a controlled act when it involves treating serious concerns related to thought, mood, emotional regulation, perception, memory, judgment, insight, behaviour, communication, or social functioning.
You can read more about psychotherapy and title requirements through the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
Is psychotherapy different from counselling or talk therapy?
The terms counselling, talk therapy, and psychotherapy are often used together, but they are not always identical. Counselling can describe a broad range of supportive conversations. Psychotherapy may involve deeper therapeutic work with mental health concerns and, in Ontario, must be provided by a regulated professional who is authorized to perform the controlled act of psychotherapy when that controlled act is being performed.
Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy?
No. Many people begin therapy without a formal diagnosis. You may be looking for support with stress, grief, trauma, anxiety, low mood, self-confidence, relationships, life transitions, emotional overwhelm, or simply a better understanding of yourself.
What happens during the first therapy session?
The first session usually focuses on what brought you to therapy, what you hope to work on, and what kind of support may feel helpful. You do not need to share everything right away. Therapy can move at a pace that feels manageable.
Is therapy confidential?
Therapy is private, but confidentiality has legal and professional limits. Donna will review consent, privacy, record keeping, communication expectations, and any limits to confidentiality before care begins so you understand how your information is handled.
Is online therapy appropriate for everyone?
Online therapy can be helpful for many people, but it is not automatically the right fit for every person or every situation. The consultation can help determine whether virtual care is appropriate based on your needs, privacy, safety, comfort, and goals.

Donna offers online therapy services for adults in Ontario, including individual counselling, EMDR therapy, women’s therapy, trauma-focused therapy, and wellness coaching.
How do I know which service is right for me?

Can I work with Donna if I am in crisis?
