How Does EMDR Work

How EMDR Therapy Works

Just like your brain naturally processes experiences during sleep—especially in the REM (rapid eye movement) phase—EMDR uses Bilateral Stimulation (i.e., guided eye movements or gentle, alternating tapping) to help your brain “reprocess” distressing memories in a healthier way.

As a result, emotions, thoughts, and beliefs that once felt overwhelming become more manageable, allowing you to move forward confidently and clearly.

Donna is certified, having completed the EMDR Virtual Training Course: Integrating EMDR Into Your Clinic Practice (20 hours of lecture, 20 hours of practicum, and 10 hours of consultation) with EMDR Consulting, an approved EMDR International Association training provider.

Benefits of EMDR Therapy

Empowering Your Brain’s Natural Learning
EMDR harnesses your brain’s innate ability to learn and adapt. It updates past experiences with fresh, present-day insights—helping you build a more balanced, empowered self.

Letting Go of the Past
Emotionally charged experiences can disrupt the natural flow of healing. EMDR helps break through these interferences, releasing the weight of past hurts so you can embrace a brighter, more vibrant present.

Organizing Your Emotions
Through a structured approach, EMDR helps you process negative and positive feelings. This clarity creates a solid foundation for rebuilding self-worth and emotional resilience.

Bilateral Stimulation for Effective Healing
By using techniques such as guided eye movements or gentle, alternating tapping, EMDR engages both sides of your brain. This process is key to effectively working through distressing memories and nurturing a healthier emotional landscape.

Benefits of EMDR

What to Expect in a Virtual EMDR Session

  1. Initial Activation: You will be asked a set of questions to access and activate the negative experience and desired adaptive resolution. This helps identify the issue that will be processed.
  2. Bilateral Stimulation: During the session, sets of rapid eye movements (or other forms of bilateral stimulation, such as tapping or auditory tones) will be applied. This helps stimulate both sides of the brain.
  3. Free Association: You will be encouraged to just “free associate” and allow your brain to naturally process the experience, without judgment or overthinking.
  4. Ongoing Processing: As we continue, you’ll be asked to briefly share what you are experiencing. This allows the brain to update the emotional connection to the memory and create new adaptive perspectives.
  5. Updating the Experience: The session will continue until the negative experience has been processed and updated to a more adaptive, present-day perspective.
  6. Integration: Once the disturbing experiences have been updated, you and your therapist will work together to integrate these new insights and perspectives into your daily life. This helps ensure lasting change and emotional healing.
  7. Multiple Sessions: For long-standing or more complex issues, multiple sessions may be needed to achieve lasting resolution.
